STUDENT WORK

Craze Magazine is the product of a semester long group project between myself and four other talented graphic design students. Each student was responsible for designing multiple ads and articles, with assigned roles to divide responsibilities.

After much discussion about content and themes, we chose to represent our magazine in a Y2K style, emulating design trends from the era. The work I created embodies the retro-futuristic and abstract style of marketing from the 2000’s.

RESEARCH

The conception of the magazine began with multiple days of brainstorming to determine our topic, leading us to choose multimedia entertainment. This meant including content about new movies, trending music, and more forms of popular media. We began assigning the number of articles and ads each of us would design, as well as what category they would fall under.

MOOD BOARD

To ensure the magazine would look unified in the end, we worked together extensively to plan the layout. By creating mood boards, we had visual representation of the Y2K style each of us wanted to apply to our articles and ads. We started searching for online sources and articles about trending topics in the entertainment industry, discussing what pieces would fall into each category. We also distributed roles within the group, with mine being Illustrator, and devised a calendar breaking down group meetings and event deadlines.

SKETCHES

Multiple rounds of sketches were done to deliver a first draft of the concept. These sketches began in graphite pencil with minimal detail, gradually incorporating color and larger scale. Each session the group had to review a new round of drafts was called Break of the Book, offering us a chance to routinely receive critique from our professor and peers.

MOCKUPS

The final magazine was a thoughtful blend of interpretations on the Y2K movement, featuring topics ranging from trending musicians to innovations in theatre. I designed 4 articles and 3 ads as part of the collective magazine, which are available to view below.
